My Russian Photo Album
Valerian S. Obolensky

.

These are some of the photographs of my book Russians in Exile - The History of a Diaspora which hasn't been published up to now, because all the publishers I approached are afraid there is `no market' for a book like this.
Some of them wanted to publish the book if I was willing to invest $ 40.000 myself,
or if I would be a genuine well known person.
These are only a few photographs; I have hundreds of them. Since I published my book on the Internet I've had so many heart warming reactions from people all over the world. Most of them are descendants of the hundreds of thousands Russians who fled Russia after the 1917 October Revolution.
There must be millions of them now, hardly knowing anything about the history of their ancestors, who couldn't take anything with them from Russia, let alone the heavy photo albums of those years.
Yet the ignorant publishers, knowing absolutely zilch about this part of history, say there's `no market' for my book.
Thank God there's the Internet to prove them wrong!
Anonymous aristocratic gentleman; about 1895

Anonymous aristocratic gentleman; about 1904

Anonymous royal lady in official court dress; about 1890

Dacha

Anonymous actress; about 1910

I have a crush on this lady, ever since I saw her photograph
for the first time, and I have every reason to believe that she was
the mistress of a gentleman well known to me. The photograph was
taken in 1920, so the lady might still be alive.

This photograph turns out a lot worse than the original.
Hundreds of agrarian people, don't know what it's all about.
